Academic Services Copy-editing Copy-editing involves systematically examining a document for any lapses in clarity, consistency or correctness. It requires logical thinking, an alert critical sense and a subtle feeling for language, along with the application of appropriate style conventions. All elements of the text, including figures and tables, quoted matter, notes and references, are rigorously examined. Proofreading This involves more than just looking for typographical errors. We attend also to matters of consistency, layout and spacing, and page- and word-breaks. Structural editing and rewriting Some texts require more extensive changes than copy-editing alone can provide. For instance, a thesis written by someone whose first language is not English may contain grammatical errors, or the expression, even where grammatically correct, may not be idiomatic. Where necessary, we may offer to rewrite a document. Indexing and glossary creation Like proofreading, indexing involves far more than is generally thought. It requires careful sorting and cross-referencing, the application of British Standards, and the use of electronic aids. Judgement is needed to decide what is to be indexed and to what depth. We are also skilled in glossary creation - that is, in creating an index of technical or specialised terms. Thesis editing This may range from simple error-checking right through to structural editing. Having worked with clients from all over the world, we are aware of the differing problems they face, and we are sensitive to the requirements of different academic institutions. Bibliographical research We can compile a bibliography on any subject, annotated where desired. We use both printed and electronic sources and can present the text in a variety of styles. We can also search for publications in a particular subject area or supply missing bibliographical data. Results of searches can be presented by author, year of publication, type of publication or keywords. Literary research This may range from straightforward fact checking through to in-depth research involving critical interpretation. In certain cases we may perform similar research in non-literary fields. Editorial tuition We offer onsite tuition to educational establishments as well as to individuals within them. Since 1994 we have presented a highly successful annual seminar on writing and bibliographical skills to social science students at Newcastle University.
